Research in nine companies indicates that a large number of older but valuable managers have plateaued; that is, they now have few if any opportunities for promotion or substantial increases in duties and responsibilities. This is due to declining rates of corporate growth and increasing numbers of younger, aggressive candidates competing in the managerial pool.
